Blood in Stool and Rectal Bleeding
The small intestine and large intestine play an essential role in digestion, nutrient absorption, and normal bowel function. Disorders affecting the intestines may cause abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, blood in stool, weight loss, anaemia, or changes in bowel habits. Some intestinal disorders are functional and do not damage the bowel, while others may cause inflammation, ulcers, narrowing, bleeding, or long-term complications. Persistent or recurrent symptoms should be evaluated to identify the underlying cause and begin appropriate treatment. Dr. Dipankar Das provides comprehensive evaluation and management of intestinal disorders using blood and stool tests, colonoscopy, biopsy, advanced imaging, and individualized medical treatment.
What does Blood in Stool mean?
Blood in stool may appear as bright red blood, maroon-coloured stool, or black tarry stool. Common causes include haemorrhoids, anal fissure, intestinal infection, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, polyps, or colorectal cancer. Although many causes are treatable and non-cancerous, recurrent or unexplained bleeding should never be assumed to be due to piles without appropriate evaluation.

Why early diagnosis matters
Early evaluation can identify colorectal polyps, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or other causes before serious blood loss or complications develop.
